Backyard feeder photography setup

Feeder, perch and background placement for clean bird portraits from the kitchen window.

Updated 1 min read

Layout

Feeder three meters from the window, perch branch a meter in front of it, and the background at least six meters behind. The distance behind is what blurs it.

The perch

Change the perch branch every couple of weeks: dogwood, then a mossy oak twig, then a loblolly pine sprig for winter. Clamp it to a stake so it can be moved without moving the feeder.

From the window

Clean glass, lens hood touching the pane, lights off in the kitchen. Shoot at an angle of about 10 degrees off straight to avoid reflections.
