Binoculars for birding: 8x42 or 10x42?

Why 8x42 fits woodland warblers better than 10x, and what matters more than the brand.

The short answer

8x42 for woods and parks, 10x42 for open water and shorebirds. Most of the birding here is in woodland, so 8x.

Why 8x

A wider field of view makes it easier to find a moving warbler in leaves, and the image shakes less. The brighter view also helps at dawn.

What matters

Close focus under two meters for butterflies and feeder birds, a comfortable eyecup position for glasses, and a harness strap so the neck does not ache after three hours.
