Porches of Oakwood: a photo series plan

A year-long series on the front porches of Historic Oakwood: the shot list, the seasons, and a print layout.

Updated 1 min read

The idea

One photograph of each of twenty porches in Historic Oakwood, each from the sidewalk, each in a different light and season. The old houses tie them together; the seasons and what people put on the porch keep it from being a catalog.

Shot list

Azaleas and dogwoods in early April. Ferns and rocking chairs in summer. Pumpkins and Halloween in October. Wreaths and string lights at blue hour in December. A few in morning fog, if it comes.

Progress

Seven of twenty done. Soft light is the limit: the porches face every direction, and hard sun puts the porch in deep shade against a bright street. Overcast mornings and the half hour after sunset work best.

Output

A 20-page zine printed at a local shop, square format, one porch per spread with the street and the year on the facing page. Ask before photographing anyone on their porch.
