Picture Control recipes — Golden hour portraits

A warm, low-contrast Rich Tone Portrait recipe for backlit portraits of friends in the last hour of sun.

Updated 1 min read

Settings

Rich Tone Portrait, contrast −2, mid-range sharpening −1, saturation 0. White balance Direct sunlight, fine-tuned A2 toward amber. Exposure +0.7 for backlit faces.

Shooting it

Put the sun behind the subject and slightly off to one side so the hair rims. Fill with a white card or a light wall. The 70-180mm at about 135mm and f/2.8 keeps the background soft without losing the eyes.

When not to use it

Midday or under trees: the warm shift turns green foliage yellow and skin orange. Switch back to Soft Rich Tone.
