Lens Analysis
NIKKOR Z 24-70mm f/4 S field notes
A year with the standard zoom: what it is good at, where f/4 falls short, and how it compares with the 28mm.
What it is for
Landscape, travel and events, where changing lenses means missing the shot. Sharp across the range at f/4 to f/8, and it retracts to a short length for the bag. Remember to extend it before the first frame.
Where f/4 falls short
Indoors and at night. At f/4 it is a stop slower than the 28mm, and the background never goes very soft.
Compared with the 28mm
At 28mm and f/4 the zoom is as sharp as the prime stopped down. The prime wins on size and a stop of light, the zoom on everything else.
