NIKKOR Z 28mm f/2.8 (SE) — rendering and sharpness
How the small 28mm draws wide open, where it is sharpest, and when to stop down.
Summary
A small, light, sharp wide-normal prime that makes the Z6III easy to carry all day. It is the street lens. At f/2.8 on a 28mm there is not much background blur, so it is not a portrait lens.
Wide open
At f/2.8 the center is already sharp on the 24.5MP sensor; the corners catch up by f/5.6. For street work at f/8 it is sharp edge to edge.
Flaws
Visible vignetting wide open and some distortion, both corrected by the lens profile in camera and in Lightroom. The focus ring is by-wire, which makes zone focusing less precise than on a mechanical ring.
When to use it
Street and travel, all day. Night walks at f/2.8. Indoor family shots in a small room. For a portrait, change to the 70-180mm.
